In December 1863, Mary Ann received a letter from Martin Delany. He was in Chicago, Illinois, signing up black men to fight for the Union army in the Civil War, and he asked Mary Ann to help. She would be paid. It would be a dangerous job, and it was just what she needed. She packed a bag and left her children with her parents. Mary Ann was one of very few black women to be a Union army recruiter. She spoke all over the northern United States, encouraging black men to fight for the Union. She heard threats and insults from vengeful whites every day.
