Even when bombarded with a whole file of information from reports of others, the observer must blank the mind and focus strictly upon what is observable in the appropriate context. Time enough, when the details of the observation are established, to take the next step of working out how they fit into the reports and impressions of others. Please let it be noted, however, that I am not telling the observer arrogantly to ignore what others say. The discipline I am advocating is one of regulating the order of an effective detective procedure which ultimately works to the advantage of both the child and the adults involved: consider the pupil in as much detail as possible, imaginatively form an idea of what may be happening within the pupil, then compare this with what others have said and, finally, in the last stage of an observation, see if it all hangs together.
Much has happened in the days and months before a child may be seen by any practised educators. Much of the brain’s development and consequent manifestations of cognition and language has happened before the child is two years old; and yet detailed educational observation may not commence until several years later. The gap can only be filled by careful, 54 TEACHING PUPILS WITH SEVERE AND COMPLEX DIFFICULTIES sensitive and focused dialogue with those who saw the child develop but may not have realised some of the significance of what was being witnessed.
1. HEMISPHERIC DOMINANCE Many perceptual confusions and disorganised processing in the brain can be traced to the degree of hemispheric dominance present (Bishop 1990). Knowing which hand is used and, indeed, if there is a preference 2 is therefore important. This information should be on file; but it is as well to check it out by observing for consistency of both the hand that is used and the foot that is used. Lack of a consistent use of a hand may be a sign that the pupil is genuinely ambidextrous but is unlikely if the pupil has drawn attention by being said to be clumsy.
