Thereafter, the film marginalizes those elements of social commentary which occupied the centre stage in Holtby’s original literary narrative and doubtless provided a major source of inspiration for her work, and it moves to the foreground, in their stead, other elements which are determined more by the classic dictates of mainstream narrative cinema than by anything else.
